Studio GWA is pleased to share that the Kennay Farms Distilling project in Rochelle, Illinois has been selected for recognition by the 2020 AIA Prairie Design Awards. Our team is grateful for the opportunity to showcase this adaptive reuse project among many other impressive projects at the virtual awards presentation on Thursday, December 17th.

Historic preservation and adaptive reuse - Kennay Farms Distilling
Located on the iconic Lincoln Highway in downtown Rochelle, Illinois, Kennay Farms Distilling celebrates the legacy of an historic theater while transforming it into a destination facility for visitors throughout the Midwest to enjoy. After eighty years of use as an active movie house, the former Hub Theater has been transformed into an 8,500 square-foot distillery with primary spaces for production, tasting, and private events.

Jennifer Spencer, Senior Project Architect, and Emily Christiansen, Interior Designer, spearheaded the design of the project. “Kennay Farms Distilling was a perfect confluence of passionate and motivated owners, skilled and efficient contractors, and senses of humor that could compete with top comedic performers,” Emily said. “This project taught me how to collaborate with a team to establish design solutions on the fly. Even more, it created lifelong friendships.”
